Why AI video tools price the way they do, what actually drives the cost of a render, and how to work out which pricing model is cheaper for your usage.

AI video pricing is confusing on purpose in some cases and by necessity in others. This is an explanation of what actually drives the cost, so you can compare tools on something other than the headline number.

Why per-video pricing barely exists

A flat "$X per video" price would be simple and is almost never offered. The reason is that videos differ in cost by more than an order of magnitude.

A thirty-second video assembled from stock footage is a search, a download, and an encode. A five-minute video with fully generated footage is thousands of generated frames, each one costing GPU time. Charging the same for both means either overcharging for the first or losing money on the second, and in practice it means both.

So tools price on the thing that actually varies: how much compute your video consumes.

What drives the cost of a render

Four factors, roughly in order of impact:

Generation method. This is the big one. Retrieving stock footage is cheap. Generating one still image per scene is moderate. Generating continuous video is expensive — often several times the cost of the alternatives for the same duration.

Length. More seconds means more scenes means more generation. This scales close to linearly, which is why a ten-minute video is a genuinely large job and not just a longer version of a one-minute one.

Resolution. Higher output resolution costs more to generate and more to encode. Rendering drafts at lower resolution while you iterate, then producing the final at full quality, is the single easiest saving available and almost nobody does it.

Extras. Voice synthesis, music, and captions add cost, but they are small relative to the visual generation. They are rarely worth optimising.

The two pricing models

Subscriptions charge a fixed monthly fee, usually with a usage cap expressed in minutes, renders, or credits. Predictable, and good if your usage is steady and near the cap. Bad if your usage is spiky, because you pay for the month you produced nothing.

Credits charge per unit of work. You buy a balance and each render draws it down according to length and method. Less predictable per month, but you are not paying for capacity you did not use, and a cheap render genuinely costs less than an expensive one.

Working out which is cheaper for you

The honest answer depends on two numbers: how much you produce, and how variable it is.

Estimate your monthly output in minutes, and note which generation method you would mostly use. Then:

  • High, steady volume of expensive renders — a subscription with a generous cap usually wins, if you will actually hit the cap most months.
  • Low or irregular volume — credits win, often by a lot. Unused subscription capacity is pure loss.
  • High volume of cheap renders (stock, stills) — credits usually win, because subscription caps tend to be priced around the expensive modes.
  • Testing and iteration heavy — credits win, because you can run twenty short tests for a fraction of one full render.

The trap in both models is the same: buying for the volume you aspire to rather than the volume you produce. Start smaller than feels right.

Questions worth asking about any AI video pricing page

  • Does the cost differ by generation method? If not, you are subsidising someone.
  • What happens to unused credits or unused subscription capacity? Expiry terms vary widely.
  • What resolution is included? 4K is sometimes gated behind a higher tier than the marketing implies.
  • Are you charged for failed renders? This one matters more than it sounds. Generation fails sometimes; a tool that bills you for its own failures is charging you for its reliability problems.
  • Can you estimate a specific video before generating it? If not, budgeting is guesswork.

Reducing what you spend

  1. Draft at low resolution. Iterate cheap, finalise expensive.
  2. Use the cheapest method the content allows. Stock for anything filmable, stills for narration-led content. Reserve generated footage for shots that genuinely need motion.
  3. Test short. Generate thirty seconds before committing to five minutes. Most problems are visible in the first thirty seconds.
  4. Cut the script. Length is a direct multiplier on cost, and most scripts are too long anyway.
