How to Make TikTok Videos With AI
Making TikToks with AI — what differs from YouTube Shorts, why native-feeling content outperforms polished content, and a process for finding what works.
Published
TikTok and YouTube Shorts share an aspect ratio and almost nothing else. The same video will often perform very differently on each, and the reason is that the audiences arrive with different expectations. This is a process for TikTok specifically.
What differs from Shorts
Polish is a liability, not an asset. TikTok's native register is informal and handheld. Content that looks produced reads as advertising, and viewers have trained themselves to swipe past advertising. On YouTube, production value is closer to neutral; on TikTok it actively costs you.
Sound is more central. More TikTok viewing happens with sound on than on Shorts. Audio choice — trending or otherwise — carries more weight.
The comment section is part of the content. TikTok surfaces comments heavily, and videos that provoke a reply outperform videos that simply inform. Building in something to disagree with is a real strategy.
Iteration cycles are faster. TikTok tends to give a video its verdict quickly. You learn sooner, which means you can run more experiments per week.
Step 1 — Write for the feed, not for the brand
The most common failure is writing TikTok copy in brand voice. It does not work. The register is conversational, direct, and often slightly abrupt.

The second is a person talking. That is the whole difference.
Step 2 — Hook in the first second
Faster than Shorts. TikTok viewers swipe at a higher rate, and the opening frame plus the opening word decide it.
What works: an unexpected statement, a visible result, a direct question, a mid-action opening that implies you missed something. What does not: logos, intros, slow builds, anything that looks like a title card.
Step 3 — Choose the format to match the intent
Selling something or making a recommendation. Use the UGC ad generator for shorts. The handheld, direct-address style is the native format for product content on TikTok, and it is the format that converts.
Building a personal or brand presence. Use avatar shorts — a consistent presenter across posts. Audiences follow faces, and rotating presenters wastes that.
Story, fact, or list content. Use AI image shorts. Cheap enough to post daily, and the format is well established in these niches.
Anything where credibility matters. Use stock footage shorts. Real footage in advice categories.
Step 4 — Respect the interface
TikTok's UI covers more of the frame than YouTube's — the caption, username, music ticker, and the button rail on the right all sit on top of your video.
Keep captions in the central band, away from the right edge and the bottom third. This is the most common avoidable mistake in repurposed content: text that was fine on another platform sitting directly under the follow button.
Step 5 — Post enough to find the pattern
TikTok performance is more variable than most platforms, and single-video conclusions are close to meaningless. Judge in batches.
A reasonable experiment: ten videos, one idea, ten different hooks. Post over two weeks. Two or three will substantially outperform the rest. Those are the shapes to repeat — not the topic, the shape of the opening.
This is only affordable if generating a variation is cheap, which is the practical argument for AI-generated short-form: the constraint moves from production capacity back to how fast you can read results.
Disclosure
Platform rules on AI-generated and synthetic media have been tightening, and they differ by platform and jurisdiction. Check TikTok's current requirements for labelling AI-generated content before you post commercially, and treat it as your responsibility rather than the tool's — non-compliance risks the account, not the software.
A checklist before posting
- Does it sound like a person, not a brand?
- Does the first second give a reason to stay?
- Are captions clear of the right rail and the bottom third?
- Does it work with sound on and off?
- Is there something a viewer might reply to?
